Famous Contemporary Illusionists
David Blaine
Blaine completed courses in card illusions and performed on the streets of the USA for a long time. David has set many world records and captivated audiences with dangerous tricks. The magician is known for his carefully thought-out public confinements. He spent almost three days in an ice prison, was buried alive in a water tank, and suspended in a glass box over the Thames for 44 days.
Americans were amazed by David’s magic, but the British proved to be a tougher audience: golfers queued up and aimed at Blaine, spectators shone laser pens in his eyes, and children pelted him with eggs. Quite a test of endurance!
David’s most astonishing trick is considered to be levitation on the sidewalk.
Penn and Teller
Penn and Teller’s tricks are at the intersection of science and magic. Advocates of rational thinking, they are known from the show “Bullshit!”, where they challenge paranormal phenomena and debunk nonsense in all its forms. Penn and Teller are also famous as illusionists who perform stomach-churning tricks using nail pullers, hanging, or catching bullets with their teeth.
In their comedic performances, the duo often reveals parts of their tricks, allowing the audience to get closer to solving them, but only to surprise them again. Penn and Teller can be seen in their famous show “Fool Us”, where they try to decipher the tricks of illusionists from around the world.
Dynamo
Steven Frayne (Dynamo) is the complete opposite of a slick illusionist. Lacking stage props, glamorous assistants, and other kitsch, he has shown magic in a new way thanks to his frail physique and restrained manner. Steven is most famous for his documentary show “Dynamo: Magician Impossible”.
He stunned the audience by swallowing jewels and then pulling them out of his stomach, turning snow into diamonds, walking on water across the Thames, and bench pressing 155 kg in the gym. This requires a lot of hard work or real magic!
Apollo Robbins
Apollo Robbins is a pickpocket magician. He often calls himself “The Gentleman Thief” because he steals from the audience only to observe their amazement when he returns their items. Initially, he gained notoriety by stealing various items from the Secret Service agents of former President Jimmy Carter. Now, the U.S. Department of Defense works with Robbins to figure out how magicians hack our brains and teach soldiers all the tricks. Catch a lifehack for career advancement!
Criss Angel
Criss Angel is an American illusionist, dubbed the Marilyn Manson of the magic world. He combines a rock-n-roll image with daredevil tricks. Criss handcuffed himself to a burning car packed with explosives and suspended himself from a moving helicopter with fishing hooks under his skin. We are unlikely to see Angel pulling a rabbit out of a hat anytime soon!
Criss Angel is considered one of the most commercially successful magicians in history: he signed a 10-year contract with Cirque du Soleil and was named Illusionist of the Year three times by Magic Castle Hollywood.
Val Valentino (The Masked Magician)
In the late 1990s, FOX Television aired the show “Breaking the Magician’s Code: Magic’s Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed”. The main character of the program is a mysterious figure in a black mask, who reveals dozens of tricks. But why such anonymity? Back then, the attitude towards magic was a bit different, and performers did not dare reveal the secrets of their tricks, fearing that other illusionists would be outraged by the “destruction” of their livelihood.
However, Valentino eventually took off the mask in front of the camera and proudly stated that understanding the trick does not diminish our interest in it but allows us to better appreciate the efforts that magicians apply to it. He explained that revealing old tricks also opens the path to innovation and development for illusionists.
Shin Lim
Shin Lim proves that magic does not have to be a silly comedic art to engage viewers. Atmospheric decorations, elegant music, and polished sleight of hand create real magic.
Shin always takes his show seriously, but in life, he is relaxed and friendly. His inspiring story of overcoming a tendon tear in his hand, which could have destroyed a magician’s career, demonstrates his incredible willpower.
Despite his challenges, Shin has not only returned to the stage but has also elevated his performances to new heights. His ability to convey emotion through his illusions captivates audiences, making each show a deeply personal experience. This personal touch is a hallmark of his style, allowing him to connect with his audience on a level that goes beyond mere entertainment. His performances are enriched with a narrative that combines both the vulnerability and strength of his journey, showcasing the depth of his artistry and the resilience of his spirit.
